The consequences of elder abuse can be devastating, leaving survivors with long-lasting physical and psychological scars. In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th, we share real-life stories and testimonies from survivors, highlighting the vital role organizations like Meritan play in supporting and empowering these individuals.
Sarah's Story: Overcoming Financial Exploitation
Sarah, an 82-year-old widow, fell victim to financial exploitation at the hands of her own son. He had been slowly draining her life savings, leaving her unable to afford basic necessities like food and medication. "I felt betrayed and helpless," Sarah recalls. "I had worked so hard all my life, and to have someone I trusted take advantage of me like that was heartbreaking." Fortunately, a concerned neighbor noticed Sarah's deteriorating condition and contacted Meritan. The organization's team of advocates immediately stepped in, providing Sarah with emergency financial assistance and connecting her with legal aid to protect her remaining assets. "Meritan was a lifeline for me," Sarah says. "They not only helped me regain my financial stability but also gave me the strength to stand up for myself and seek justice."
John, a 75-year-old man with a disability, endured years of physical and emotional abuse from his caregiver. The abuse left him with broken bones, bruises, and a shattered sense of self-worth. "I felt trapped and powerless," John remembers. "I didn't know where to turn or who to trust." It wasn't until a concerned neighbor witnessed the abuse and contacted Meritan that John's ordeal came to an end. Meritan's team immediately removed John from the abusive situation and provided him with safe housing, medical care, and counseling services. "Meritan gave me a second chance at life," John says. "They helped me heal not just physically but emotionally as well. I'll be forever grateful for their compassion and support."
