In the heart of South Memphis, a new food truck is serving up more than just delicious meals. Milli's Cuisine, founded by sisters Domonique and Lakisha, is a testament to resilience, community spirit, and the power of home-cooked food.
A Dream Born from Loss
The journey of Milli's Cuisine began in 2017, but it was tragically interrupted when the sisters lost their brother to gun violence in 2018. "We were gonna start a restaurant together," Domonique shares. After a period of grief, they revived their dream, launching their food truck in January 2024.
Bringing Business Back to South Memphis
As proud South Memphis natives, Domonique and Lakisha are committed to revitalizing their community. "We want to bring back business in South Memphis," they explain. "A lot of businesses are scared to go in South Memphis, and we are not because that's where we are from."
A Menu Rooted in Tradition
Milli's Cuisine is known for its fish and spaghetti, but their menu boasts a variety of offerings including seafood nachos, Philly egg rolls, and homemade soul food. "Everything is fresh. We don't do anything out of the can," Lakisha proudly states. Their cooking is inspired by their mother, who also works on the truck, passing down family recipes and techniques.
Community at the Heart of Their Mission
For Domonique and Lakisha, Milli's Cuisine is more than a business - it's a way to give back. They regularly participate in community events and feed the homeless with their leftover food. "Anytime somebody has something positive, we want to be involved," they say. Their annual 4th of July block party on Seepers Street is a testament to their commitment to community.
Addressing Gun Violence Through Opportunity
When asked about addressing gun violence in Memphis, the sisters emphasize the importance of engaging youth. "Just giving our youth something to do," Domonique suggests. "Out of mind is out of time. So giving them something to do and to focus on something else other than violence."
