MEMPHIS, TN - The weekly District 6 luncheon featured Ronald Merritt, Executive Director of the Raleigh Community Development Corporation (CDC), as the guest speaker. Introduced by Charlie Caswell, Merritt delivered a compelling presentation on the importance of fostering a robust small business ecosystem within the Raleigh community.

Merritt began by highlighting the ongoing development in areas surrounding Raleigh, emphasizing the opportunity to cultivate a thriving business pool within the district. He addressed the statistical reality that small businesses, despite often being solo ventures, collectively contribute significantly to employment and economic growth. He spotlighted the lack of businesses with sustainable growth, highlighting a need for ventures that move beyond single-owner operations and provide employment opportunities within the community.

The Raleigh CDC partners with organizations like Living Cities and Main Street America to address the "business desert" in Raleigh, akin to food deserts. Merritt stressed the importance of passing down businesses to future generations, contrasting this with the fleeting nature of traditional jobs. He presented a stark comparison between low-wage employment and the potential financial gains from illicit activities, emphasizing the urgent need for viable economic alternatives.

"If we want to address this as a community, we need to address the fact that we need more small businesses.... And, we need thriving small businesses," Merritt stated, outlining the Raleigh CDC's efforts to grow a small business council within Raleigh.

Merritt addressed misconceptions surrounding governmental assistance, emphasizing that success hinges on access to information and strong relationships. He acknowledged the challenges faced by African American business owners, who often struggle to overcome hurdles despite years in operation.

The Raleigh CDC, in collaboration with partners like River City County, Dr. Swift, Dr. Grant at Tennessee Small Business, Councilwoman Logan, Commissioner Cadwick, the City of Memphis, and Chef Willard in the small business area of Chef County, aims to provide resources and training to empower local entrepreneurs. This includes navigating certifications, securing government contracts, and accessing capital.

Merritt highlighted the need for businesses to be financially prepared to seize opportunities when they arise, envisioning a future where community members can acquire vacant properties and establish thriving businesses. He emphasized the different levels of business ownership, acknowledging the complexities of scaling operations and managing employees.

The Raleigh CDC offers ongoing training programs, including partnerships with organizations like The Lonely Entrepreneur, which provides 24/7 access to resources and support for entrepreneurs. These initiatives equip business owners with the tools to succeed, enabling them to capitalize on opportunities and contribute to the community's economic growth.

Looking ahead, Merritt envisions the creation of a Raleigh business chamber, allowing the community to determine its own economic fate by fostering job creation and supporting successful business owners. He concluded by emphasizing the vital role of a strong business ecosystem in fostering healthy families and empowering future generations.

The Raleigh CDC is dedicated to revitalizing Memphis, TN, by providing resources and support to the Raleigh community. With a focus on connecting residents to resources and organizations, they promote community growth, health, and well-being. Find out more at https://raleighcdc.org/about-us/.
