A thriving community is built on a foundation of access-access to good jobs, vital resources, and, perhaps most importantly, hope. In Memphis’ historic Orange Mound neighborhood, a new narrative is taking root, thanks to the dedication of local leaders, organizations, and the young men determined to change their lives.
Investing in the Future: Men Mentoring Men
At the heart of this movement is the Men Mentoring Men program, a grassroots initiative led by the Serving In Christ Outreach Ministry Inc. and its passionate founder, Ms. Lashanta Rudd. Each week, Ms. Rudd gathers a group of young men at the Orange Mound Community Center, not just to talk, but to act. They roll up their sleeves, picking up litter and beautifying their neighborhood, making Orange Mound cleaner and safer for everyone.
But this program goes far beyond community service. It’s about investing in people-helping these young men secure well-paying jobs, regain their driver’s licenses, and even register to vote. As one participant asked with excitement after registering, “Can I vote for the president now?” The answer: “Yes, you can. You are now a registered voter.” Moments like these are powerful reminders of the impact of empowerment and inclusion.
Wisdom from Community Leaders
A key part of Men Mentoring Men’s success is the wisdom shared by local leaders. Recent sessions have featured Commissioner Charlie Caswell and Commissioner Mickell Lowery, who offer life lessons on mindset, relationships, and the importance of community. As Commissioner Lowery reminds the group, “What is more important than money? Relationships.” Changing your thought process, he teaches, can change your life.
These sessions are more than lectures-they’re conversations that spark hope and ambition. As community member Janet Bell McClora observed, “They look so happy that someone is taking the time to invest into their lives. This has brought me to tears.”
Community Support and Resources
Support for these efforts extends throughout the city. Lashanta Rudd has been a vocal advocate, championing new resources like the Orange Mound Resource Center inside the community center. Mayor Paul Young has been a big supporter and ultimately gave the approval for the creation of the Orange Mound Resource Center inside the community center. Events at the Orange Mound Library, such as employment workshops and guest speaker sessions, provide additional opportunities for residents to connect with jobs and resources.
Creating a New Narrative
Programs like Men Mentoring Men are more than just job training or community clean-ups-they are about rewriting the story of Orange Mound. They show what’s possible when a community comes together to support its own, offering a hand up rather than a handout.
As Ms. Rudd and Serving In Christ Outreach Ministry Inc. continue their mission to support disadvantaged individuals with comprehensive services, they set an example for others in Memphis and beyond. Their work proves that when we invest in people-when we pour wisdom, opportunity, and love into our communities-we create a ripple effect of positive change.
How You Can Get Involved
If you live in Orange Mound and are seeking employment, resources, or simply a chance to be part of something bigger, you are encouraged to join the next Men Mentoring Men session at the Orange Mound Library, 843 Dallas St., at 10:30 a.m. Together, we can continue to build a brighter future for Orange Mound-one relationship, one job, and one changed mindset at a time.
