Local & National News | December 26, 2025
Discover how We Fight Monsters turns trauma into triumph in Memphis. It’s time to amplify hope and get involved.

The Reality of the Fight

Hello, everybody. I want to talk to you today about a subject that touches every corner of this country, from the quietest towns to the busiest city streets. We often talk about the challenges we face—addiction, broken homes, the chaos of modern life—but we don't always call them what they really are. But Kasey Ables and the team at an organization called We Fight Monsters do. They call them monsters.

And they are right. These are the monsters of addiction, of human and narcotics trafficking, and of a broken society. These are challenges that don't just disappear on their own. They require folks who are willing to stand up, look that darkness in the eye, and say, "Not here. Not today."

From the Foxhole to the Frontlines

Now, the story of this organization isn't just a policy paper; it's a testament to the human spirit. It started with Ben and Jess, two founders who were once homeless and struggling with addiction right there in the streets of South Memphis. They had what they called a "foxhole prayer." They said, "God, if you got us out of this, we'll come back for the people that we love".

And that is exactly what they did. They returned to the very neighborhoods where they once struggled to become a vessel of light for others. They are taking old trap houses—places of despair—and turning them into "Dope to Hope" homes, creating sober living communities for people escaping trafficking and domestic violence. That is the audacity of action.

The Glow Stick Moment

You know, Kasey shared a powerful image that stuck with me. She talked about a glow stick. When you look at a glow stick in the package, it’s dull. You don't see its potential. It’s only when you crack it—when it goes through that pressure—that the light begins to shine.

That is what We Fight Monsters is doing. They are showing us that even when we are cracked by life, by trauma, or by addiction, we can shine. Kasey’s own husband is five years sober, proof that there is power in change and power in admitting we need help.

Planting Seeds of Hope

We are entering a season where we need to get amplified. We need to rise above the negative noise that tells people they aren't good enough. Kasey spoke about the philosophy of "meeting people where they're at". It’s about understanding that hope isn't just an abstract concept. Hope is tangible. Hope is a warm meal. Hope is a jacket. Hope is a smile from a stranger.

When we plant those seeds of hope, we drown out the noise of despair. And as the scripture tells us, you reap what you sow. When we plant hope, we harvest a stronger community.

Your Call to Action

Now, the events at South Bellevue—the warm meals, the "Toy Land"—those are powerful moments. But the work of We Fight Monsters doesn't end when the tents come down. The monsters of addiction and trafficking do not take a day off, and neither can we.

So, here is my ask of you. Don't just applaud the work—fuel it.

We need you to step into the arena. Turning a trap house into a "Dope to Hope" home takes resources. Meeting people where they are, in the midst of their chaos, takes volunteers who are willing to plant those seeds of hope.

I am asking you to dig deep. If you have the means, donate. If you have the time, volunteer. Go to wefightmonsters.org and find out how you can help. Because as Kasey reminded us, "Embracing the suck doesn't mean you have to do it alone". Let’s make sure they never have to.

Let’s fight these monsters together. Let’s amplify hope.
